Gurveen Kaur

Gurveen Kaur

President

Gurveen is a fourth year Arts student who doesn’t know much, except that she loves to look up at the sky and wonder how she ended up on this planet. She has hundreds of questions about everything in the Universe and as much as they terrify her, she would still love to know all the answers. Find her at club events to talk to her and maybe have some fun conversations about our beautiful Universe.

Chantal Hemmann

Chantal Hemmann

VP Academic

Chantal is a first year science student with an endless fascination for space. She greatly enjoys laughing at her friends when they point to Jupiter in the night sky and ask her what star it is, but also spends a fair amount of time reading, playing the piano, and wishing she were stargazing.

Kamryn Diehl

Kamryn Diehl

VP Promotions

Kamryn is a 4th year combined major in science student studying physics, computer science, and biology. Her interest in astronomy stemmed from watching NOVA documentaries with her Dad as a kid, and she continues to appreciate space by going to spontaneous observation nights with her pals (“spontaneous” because the weather app is not to be trusted). When it's cloudy out, Kamryn enjoys gardening, playing video games, and drumming.

Joshua Schirmaier

Astrophotography Director

Josh is a second-year engineering student that hopes to pursue a career in the space industry as an aerospace engineer. He has had a passion for space and astronomy for as long as he can remember and now spends most of his clear nights observing or photographing the night sky. In the rest of his free time, he enjoys activities like reading, watching movies, and going on hikes.

Sean Heakes

Sean Heakes

Observational Event Director

Having grown up in light polluted cities Sean longs for clear dark skies. He spends his days overanalyzing weather forecasts and on overcast evenings you can find him watching image processing tutorials on YouTube. Second year undergraduate.

Christa Agoawike

Christa Agoawike

Secretary

Christa is a second-year science student doing a combined major in biology and oceanography. Their interest in astronomy started young with their discovery of black holes and with the help of a YouTube channel called Kurzgesagt. In their free time, they love to sleep, watch anime and re-read their favourite manhwa, Solo Leveling. They’re excited to learn more about astronomy and help others learn too.

Ayan

General Officer

Ayan is a first year in the Faculty of Science looking to pursue a combined Physics and Astronomy degree, and to hopefully pursue research in the future. She is a huge space nerd, is fascinated by the night sky, and loves going on observations. She is also a massive Sci-Fi movie enthusiast (Star Wars, Interstellar, all the classics).

Elsa Wei

Elsa Wei

VP Observational Apprentice

Elsa is a 2nd year visual art major and plans to minor in computer science. She starts learning more about astronomy after taking physics courses in high school. She likes every stars and has so many questions about multiverse. In her free time, she likes reading, drawing animation, playing tennis and rhythm games.

Lucas Kuhn

Lucas Kuhn

President

Lucas is a 5th-year astronomy major at UBC from Toronto. His research primarily focuses on Galaxy structure and evolution where he hopes to answer some questions like "how does a galaxy's dark matter halo affect its evolution? '' or "how do supermassive blackholes form?". Outside of his work, Lucas has spent his whole life with his head in the stars hoping to one day be able to explore them himself. However, until that time comes, you can find him down here, on earth, either stargazing, taking astrophotos, and probably cramming something school-related in there too.

Baldeep Singh

Baldeep Singh

VP Observational

Baldeep is a 4th year Physics and Astronomy student. His passion for astronomy comes from the multitude of mind bending questions that can be asked when he gazes upon the Universe. Outside of his love for the cosmos, he loves to spend time outdoors, playing/watching sports, and listening to podcasts.

Grace Sun

Grace Sun

VP Social

Grace is in her 4th year of Cellular, Anatomical, and Physiological Sciences and is the 13th moon lander. She loves skiing, mangas, and stargazing, although doing all together might break a few bones.
"such a great view from up here"

Devin Kettle

Devin Kettle

Equipment Coordinator

Devin is a staff member and occasional student at UBC. His love for astronomy was sparked by seeing the Milky Way for the first time while camping as a kid on a clear, dark summer's night in the Kootenays. That moment of immense perspective has stuck with him since then. He enjoys camping, playing Ultimate, and chilling in hammocks.

Srishti Paul

Srishti Paul

Observational Event Director

Srishti is a First year Engineering student with a great interest in space and astronomy. She enjoys singing, cooking and painting. You might also find her looking at the sky like 90% of the time (hopefully not bumping into more people again). She loves listening to music and living in her own little world or randomly ending up at the beach at 4 A.M.

Aakash Anantharaman

Aakash Anantharaman

Social Coordinator

Aakash is a first year student at UBC who is planning on doing the combined physics and astronomy program. He is a an astrophysics enthusiast with a keen interest in the subject, developed from his first (of countless) viewings of the movie Interstellar. He hopes to eventually find himself working at an observatory or in academia. In his free time one can find him working on drawing sketches or reading novels and manga.

Erica Bell

Erica Bell

General Officer

Erica is a third year Speech Science major, and an FNEL minor. As a child, stargazing on her roof was her favourite pastime. Her brother's aspiration to become an astronaut furthered her fascination with space. She is particularly interested in the thought of a planet similar to Earth somewhere out there in the Universe. On her free time, you can find Erica paddling in the ocean, at the gym, or playing videos games.
