What Would Happen If the Sun Suddenly Disappeared?

The Sun plays a crucial role in keeping Earth alive. It provides light, warmth, and the gravity that holds the solar system together [1]. If the Sun suddenly disappeared, Earth would change in dramatic and dangerous ways.
For a brief moment, nothing would seem different. Sunlight takes about eight minutes to reach Earth [2], so during that short window, the world would continue as usual. Then the light would disappear. The sky would go completely dark, and daytime would no longer exist. Earth would be left in permanent night.
Darkness would only be the beginning. The Sun is Earth’s main source of heat, and without it, temperatures would start dropping almost immediately. Within days, the air would become bitterly cold. Oceans would slowly begin to freeze from the surface down, and much of the planet would turn into ice over time.
Plants would be among the first living things to suffer. Without sunlight, photosynthesis would stop, causing plants to die. As plants disappear, animals and humans would soon follow, since the food chain depends on them. Life on the surface of Earth would become nearly impossible.
There would also be changes happening beyond temperature and light. The Sun’s gravity is what keeps Earth and the other planets in their orbits [3]. Without that gravitational pull, Earth would stop orbiting and drift through space in a straight path. The solar system itself would slowly fall apart as planets moved away from where they once were.
A small number of organisms might survive for a short time. Some deep-sea creatures rely on heat from Earth’s interior rather than sunlight, but even these ecosystems would struggle as the planet continues to cool.
The Sun is more than just a star in the sky. It is the foundation of Earth’s climate, movement, and life. If it were gone, our planet would quickly become a dark, frozen world drifting silently through space.
